Cross stitch friends for life

Hi, I would like to stitch this and I don’t know if it is possible but I would like to give the letters a Scottish tartan look (tradition red tartan) is this an effect I could achieve with variegated thread? (I have never used this before) if so would I stitch in rows or one…
